06 Assess risk

Know what’s at stake

Throughout this series, we’ve explored how Vibrant Planet helps you identify landscape features, view wildfire hazard, and build planning areas. Now we will consider how the wildfire hazard interacts with identified SARAs to determine risk.

The Vibrant Planet Platform calculates the wildfire hazard (burn probability + intensity) for your entire landscape (picture 1) and then considers the interaction of that hazard with all SARAs on your landscape (picture 2) and calculates the wildfire risk to those SARAs (picture 3).

As we have previously covered, wildfire hazard is the probability that a fire will occur in a specific geographic location and the predicted intensity of that potential wildfire. Risk is the likelihood of the wildfire hazard to decrease the value of a single, or multiple SARAs. If you recall, each SARA has a unique set of response functions to every class of wildfire hazard.

Vibrant Planet calculates the wildfire risk (loss in value) to each SARA on your landscape if no management were to occur.

Vibrant Planet allows you to create a detailed and specific quantified wildfire risk analysis by exposing each SARA to the wildfire hazard and determining the risk to that SARA’s value if no management were to occur. This also means that you can isolate risk to specific categories of SARAs.

Vibrant Planet displays the wildfire risk for a specific category of SARAs (safety).

Science Corner: GTR-315

The process we use for aggregating the values on the landscape and modeling their interaction with fire is informed by GTR-315, a Quantitative Wildfire Risk Assessment (QWRA) Framework. GTR-315 has become the standard framework that land management and natural resource agencies follow for determining baseline wildfire risk.
